Have you ever wondered about the history of vape cartridges? What's inside them and how do they work? We'll go over what a vape cartridge is and talk about why it was invented. You might be surprised to find that vaping is actually an old idea!
The Start of Vaping
To understand the modern-day vape cartridge, we need to take a brief look at the history of Vaping.
Vaping or inhaling vapor has historical mentions dating as far back as 5th century B.C. to the Scythian Civilization. They heated herbs over hot stones to produce a natural vapor. Fast forward about 1000 years, and the Moguls invented the first water pipe or "hookah".

Joseph Robinson and the First Vaporizer
The next major technological leap happened in 1927. Joseph Robinson is credited with inventing the first hand-held vaporizer. He held the first patent ever for a vaporizer device.
Although different from what they are now, this vaporizer had many similarities such as holding tanks for heatable liquids and heating components. Robinson developed this technology during Prohibition, but cigarettes were vastly more popular.

Smokeless Non-Tobacco Cigarette (1960s)
In the 1960s, Herbert A. Gilbert created the "Smokeless Non-Tobacco Cigarette" to help people stop smoking. In his patent, he referred to the holding tank as a "cartridge" - the first known use of the term in this context.

The Modern Vape Pen
In 2003, Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, created the modern e-cigarette after his father passed from lung cancer. His prototype had a mouthpiece/reservoir combination with a battery body attached. This "Cig-a-like" became the blueprint for modern vapes.

Cartomizers and Clearomizers
In 2007, the Sheikh brothers invented the Cartomizer, integrating the heating element directly into the reservoir.
Later in 2010, the "Clearomizer" appeared - the first prototype of the modern cartridge. It featured a clear tank (hence the name) where you could see the liquid and coil.

Cartridges in the Medicinal Industry
As e-cigs grew, the herbal industry took notice. "Eagle Bill" invented the "Shake and Vape" for botanical herbs.

Early cartridges for extracts used plastic wicks and often resulted in a burnt taste.

Today, drastic changes have been made. Modern cartridges use ceramic or quartz coils, are wickless, and offer superior flavor and performance without leaching or burnt tastes.
